Beginning in July of 2011, Drs. Saperstein and Bergman have been serving as team orthopedic surgeons for the FAU athletic program. They have been providing orthopedic care on and off the field to athletes on all the FAU teams from football to women's basketball. "It's truly been a pleasure keeping these very dedicated athletes on the field and at the top of their games" stated Dr. Saperstein at a recent away football game in Troy, Alabama. Having previously worked with professional athletes as a team physician for the New York Jets and the New York Rangers, Dr. Saperstein went on to say that "I have always wanted to work with athletes on the collegiate level."
The doctors have been providing on the field emergency orthopaedic care at home and away football games as well as home men's and women's basketball games. In addition, the doctors have been treating athletes from all FAU teams at a weekly orthopedic clinic in the FAU training room. They have also performed surgery on those athletes with more serious orthopedic injuries. Dr. Bergman indicated that "working closely with the very dedicated staff of FAU athletic trainers, as well as with a team of other medical specialists including internists, emergency room doctors, cardiologists and neurologists, has allowed us to provide top notch care to these young athletes."
Both Drs. Saperstein and Bergman have a long history of providing sports medicine care to injured athletes. In addition to their current postions at FAU, both doctors are serving as team physicians for the Spanish River High School athletic program. Previously, they had been team physicians for the athletic programs at Pope John Paul II High School and Olympic Heights High School. Dr. Saperstein completed a sports medicine fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and is board certified in orthopaedic sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
