Alan L. Saperstein M.D.

Dr. Saperstein is an orthopaedic surgeon with board certifications in both orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine.  He has practiced in South Florida since 1995 and in Boca Raton since 2002. He is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College.  He received his M.D. from New York University School of Medicine where he was awarded the Valentine Mott Medal.  He performed his surgical internship and orthopedic residency at New York University Medical Center/Bellevue Hospital before completing a sports medicine fellowship at Lenox Hill Hospital where he served as a team physician with the New York Jets and New York Rangers.
Dr. Saperstein practices both operative and nonoperative orthopedics. He specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery, with particular emphasis on the knee and shoulder.  He is the founder of the Shoulder Institute at Boca Raton Regional Hospital.  He also performs joint replacement surgery, fracture repair surgery and hand surgery.

Dr. Saperstein was one of the first surgeons in South Florida to perform all arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. This minimally invasive surgery has resulted in less scarring, diminished pain and earlier return to function than the older, open and mini-open techniques that are still performed by other surgeons. He is able to treat most shoulder pathology arthroscopically without the need for large, painful scars. Shoulder dislocations, labral tears and acromioclavicular joint arthritis can be treated in this manner.

Dr. Saperstein has extensive experience in arthroscopic knee reconstruction as well. He has performed several hundred ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstructions with excellent results. Most patients return to their previous level of sports participation. He has also performed several thousand arthroscopic surgeries for meniscal tears, loose bodies and articular pathology with equally successful outcomes.
Dr. Saperstein performs total joint replacement surgery on the knee, shoulder and hip.  He performs several newer procedures that many other orthopaedists do not offer including reverse shoulder arthroplasty, unicompartmental knee arthroplasty and customized total knee arthroplasty.

Dr. Saperstein is currently team orthopaedic surgeon for the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) athletic program as well as the Spanish River High School athletic program.  In the past, Dr. Saperstein has served as team physician for numerous other high school and community athletic programs including Pope John Paul II High School and Olympic Heights High School. He has published numerous articles on various orthopedic surgery and sports medicine topics.  He has appeared frequently on WPTV News and WFTL Radio to discuss various topics in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine. He is a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Dr. Saperstein is on the medical staff of Boca Raton Regional Hospital (BRRH) where he is Chief of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department. He serves on the Medical Executive Committee and Operating Room Committee. Most of his surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis at BRRH or the Boca Raton Outpatient Surgery and Laser Center.
